Replacing Valve Cover Gasket - What about the oil in the spark plug shaft?
I have a 1996 Saturn SL2 DOHC that was full of oil in the number one plug. I removed the plugs and then the valve cover and plan to replace the gaskets (cover and rings).
I'm afraid I screwed up by removing the plug that was covered with oil. Obviously the oil went into the engine when the plug was removed. Is this something to worry about? If so, is there an easy way to correct the problem?
Thanks for the info. How do I get the oil out of the spark plug tubes (wires)?
There is absolute no problem that oil will burn off seconds after start up. Nothing to worry about just make sure the spark plug tubes are free from oil before putting in the new plugs, you can spray a little bit of carb cleaner down the tubes to wash the oil down into the cylinders this is fine and will not cause any problems but it will smoke for a few seconds on start up and then go away after the oil and carb cleaner are burned up. I do this all the time when performing a valve cover gasket replacement where the spark plug tubes get filled with oil.
