What is the most economical way to performance build a 5.0 L (305) Chevy small block?
Yes, I am indeed talking about a 305, not the bigger 350. I love 350 Chevys, but I want to do something different. I may build a mild performance built Chevy 305 for my Camaro in the future, and I want to know what course of action would be best, especially in terms of creating low end torque, and keeping the price down low.
Before you get on a soapbox and preach, I know that 305's have numerous limitations as compared to 350's and larger displacement small and big block engines. For one thing, the bores in the cylinders of the 305 are small in diameter. Also, a lot of Camaros have smog equipment that bogs down performance, and also, the 305 can't inhale nor exhale very well with stock exhaust manifolds and a stock air cleaner.
What sort of budget do I have? I want the total cost to be under $5k. I do want to increase HP, but I really want to increase torque more.
I am considering a Crane cam, Edelbrock intake, Demon 625 Carb, and dual exhaust pipes.
Any other ideas?
The 305 has potential !! I have had several, that ran very well ! I may be off track , but i found that if you change the rear gear to a lower gear and make a few mod's to the 305, you have a sleeper !! My 84 z 28 ( 305 ) would pull the front wheels off the ground with a 4:11 rear gear. Go for it !!!! Good luck !!
Chevy's Deluxe HP 'crate' engine popular with hot-rodders
The dirty little secret of hot-rodding is that an awful lot of those '32 Ford roadsters and street rods of all brands have 350-cubic-inch Chevrolet V-8s under their hoods.
