What kind of problems can happen if you blow a head gasket?
I was driving on the interstate doing 70 when I noticed oil burning in my rear view mirror. I live in the boonies and couldn't pull over right away. AS SOON AS MY OIL LIGHT CAME ON I pulled over and turned off the motor. No sounds or nothing strange coming from engine. I am curious as to what kind of damage I could of done if I shut off the motor right after the oil light came on and I heard no noise from engine? Doesn't the mechanic just have to rebuild the head with a gasket set or is it more involved? What causes a head hasket to blow?

PS it is a 1997 3.1L Chev V-6 w/AC and FWD...
You could overheat the engine.
You could damage the head with the bad gasket.
You'll burn coolant.
You can contaminate the oil with coolant.
Those are the major issues with a bad head gasket other than the oil consumption and the burning oil of course is never any good.
Your repairs will run between $750 to $1000 including parts and new fluids. Get the head gasket from GM.
